Model Y Youth Edition Exposed
Tesla is the only one who can make their "bare-bones" Model Y even more stripped down.
Firstly, it is most likely not a completely new model. According to the blogger's description, the wheelbase is similar to that of the Model Y, and the body curves are extremely similar to the Model Y. However, there are changes in the front and rear light styles.
Secondly, it is also a five-seat SUV, but the interior is different from the current Model Y. For example, the center console adopts a "pass-through design," and the iconic panoramic sunroof has been replaced with a regular hardtop.
Combining this with the news that Musk revealed during the Q2 earnings call, the "affordable Tesla model" has already started production on the Model 3/Y production line in the first half of this year and is expected to be released in Q4. Putting all these clues together, the cheap model that Musk mentioned is not the highly anticipated "Model 2," but a more stripped-down "cheap Model Y."

01 Cheaper Model Y
The cheaper Model Y is indeed very affordable. Judging from the spy video of the disguised car, cost-cutting measures are everywhere.
Firstly, in terms of appearance, although the body size and wheelbase are almost identical to the Model Y, there are significant differences in the front and rear lights. The current Model Y's headlights are split, with the daytime running light strip on the hood and the main headlight group located below the strip in the fog light area. However, on the disguised car, the headlight group has been moved to the hood position. This means that the cheaper model has changed from split headlights to integrated headlights, and because of the headlights, the light strip on the current Model Y is also likely to be canceled.

Of course, it is also possible that it will adopt a similar integrated front headlight design like the previously released Tesla Robotaxi.
The rear taillights are an even more obvious cost-cutting measure. The current Model Y's taillights have a rough-textured diffuser plate at the bottom, which creates a diffused light effect. However, on the disguised model, there is no whole diffuser plate at the same position; instead, it is painted the same color as the body. This means that the iconic diffused taillights on the Model Y are likely to be canceled in the new model.
Moreover, the taillight group's design is also different. The current Model Y has a贯穿-style taillight strip, but on the disguised car, it is a segmented taillight, which somewhat resembles the old Model Y taillights but with sharper lines.

Apart from these changes, there are no significant differences in other aspects of the appearance, such as the 19-inch wheels and HW 4.0 cameras.
Next, let's look at the interior changes. Although most of it is covered, the first impression is that it is more "bare-bones" than the current Model Y. The iconic panoramic sunroof that was previously on Tesla models is gone. Now, the disguised car has a regular hardtop, and not even a small sunroof is present.
From this change, the difference in quality is immediately apparent. Interestingly, some netizens joked, "It's not a downgrade in configuration; it's an epic upgrade."

The entire vehicle's seat material has changed to a "fabric拼接" textile material, and the ambient light strip that runs around the car is also likely to be canceled.
Moreover, the rear entertainment screen, which was a highlight feature of the Model Y and Model 3, has also disappeared, replaced by a USB port.

In addition to these changes, the following differences can also be seen between the disguised model and the current Model Y:
- The tweeter on the A-pillar has been removed, indicating that the audio system will be downgraded.
- The clothes hook in the rear row is gone.
- The rear legroom appears visually smaller than that of the current Model Y, which also suggests that the wheelbase may have been shortened in the new model.
Overall, the "luxurious elements" that were already limited on the Model Y have been ruthlessly compressed.
In the front row, there are significant changes to the center console. Firstly, the lower part of the center console has become a pass-through design, without the current floor design, allowing the foot space of the driver and passenger to be interconnected.
However, this design is common in some MPVs, but now the Tesla Cybertruck also has a similar design under the center console.
Nevertheless, it still uses a screen for gear shifting and a stalk for turn signals, and the front-row seat ventilation is also likely to be canceled.
In terms of configuration, it is not difficult to see that compared with the current Model Y, there is indeed a downgrade. However, interestingly, this cheap model is still equipped with HW 4.0 hardware. It is not difficult to guess Tesla's cost-cutting logic with such an operation.
02 Price is Key
Judging from the appearance of the disguised car, it is most likely a streamlined version based on the Model Y.
With this assumption in mind, you will find that Tesla's most popular model has already developed a product system of medium, large, and extra-large sizes.

The "medium size" is this upcoming disguised model, and the "extra-large size" is naturally the recently unveiled Model Y L.
Tesla's extensive modifications to its most popular model are largely a compromise due to the shrinking market share, especially after Tesla released its worst quarterly report in nearly a decade.
This can be seen from Musk's attitude towards this cheap model during the Q2 earnings call.

During the Q2 earnings call, Musk reluctantly revealed the news only after repeated inquiries from analysts, saying, "It's better to wait and see after the new car is released," showing no intention of hyping up this model.
This is related to Musk's reluctance to launch a cheaper model. It has been reported that Musk terminated the Model 2 project, which was originally scheduled for release in 2025, and even said in an internal meeting, "Making cheap cars won't change the world."
Musk's strategy has shifted from the "electric car dream" to the "AI dream."
However, compared to the Robotaxi and intelligent robot concepts that Musk has promised, which may not be realized for two to three years, a cheaper, more affordable model is undoubtedly the most direct way to stimulate Tesla's current business.

After all, the refreshed Model Y has already set a precedent for significantly boosting Tesla's business, raising the average sales price of Tesla vehicles from 274,500 yuan in Q1 to 293,900 yuan, and pulling the automotive business gross margin back up from 16.2% to 17.2%, effectively stopping the downward trend.

It is not hard to guess what kind of effect a cheaper "Model Y" would have when it appears.
Of course, it all depends on whether the price is truly affordable.
